Innovation for a Sustainable Healthcare System: Tackling Demographic Change

Germany’s healthcare system is under growing pressure. An aging population, increasing disease burden, and a shrinking workforce are driving up costs and straining resources. Without targeted reforms, health expenditures could rise to 18% of GDP by 2050. In collaboration with the vfa (Verband Forschender Arzneimittelhersteller), Vintura has developed a new short study that explores how medical, technological, and organizational innovation can help transform care delivery and secure long-term sustainability.

How innovation can help tackle demographic change in Germany

Three strategic solutions, seven real-world examples

The report identifies three key strategies that can help reduce the burden on the healthcare system while improving outcomes for patients and professionals alike:
  • Shifting care to outpatient and home settings
  • Improving health in working-age populations
  • Enhancing patient safety and reducing avoidable harm
These strategies are illustrated through seven case studies that show how innovation can be implemented in practice. Together, they demonstrate that a more sustainable healthcare system is possible—one that could reduce projected costs to 12% of GDP while improving care and relieving staff.
